Wondershare Recoverit for Windows Review: It Could Be Better

Out of 5 Total Score
No. 6 Among all Windows solutions
Last update on
Wondershare Recoverit is a common name in the data recovery industry. It claims to have a 95% recovery rate, but how accurate is that figure? In this review, we put it to the test to see just how effective it is.

Windows • Wondershare Recoverit
Top Pros
-
Modern interface. The interface is modern and up-to-date. There are options to scan folders and other specific locations, like the Recycle Bin. But, this is primarily a cosmetic addition that does little to aid with recovery outside of user experience.
-
Create bootable disks. The program can create bootable disks that bypass the operating system, allowing you to recover your data.
-
Video Repair. The program can repair video files that refuse to play.
-
Fast scanning speeds. It can scan disks fast, reducing overall recovery time.
-
Preview images. When previewing images the program can scale and flip them.
Top Cons
-
False positives for bad sectors on Bitlocker devices. When scanning Bitlocker-encrypted devices, the program shows that there are bad sectors. This is a false positive.
-
Scanning Bitlocker-encrypted devices. In order to scan devices encrypted by Bitlocker, you need to unlock them in the operating system.
-
Confirming Bitlocker status. In order for the program to detect that the Bitlocker volume is unlocked, it needs to restart.
-
No end time was given. No indication was given of when the recovery will be finished.
-
Resizing of the program. It’s not possible to resize the main window.
-
Cannot scan the entire disk. You cannot scan entire disks. Instead, you must scan the volumes.
-
Scanning disk images. It is not possible to scan byte-to-byte disk images.
-
Creation of disk images. You cannot create byte-to-byte images using the application.
-
Not convenient to install the program. During installation, the program downloads additional installation files. After installation finishes, it opens the program's site automatically.
-
It is not possible to install without the internet. Since you need to download additional files to install the program, it is not possible to install without an internet connection.
-
Discovered partitions are not user-friendly. Lost partitions are in the general list and have no indication of what disk they belong to. It is very difficult to choose the right one to scan.
-
The timing of the scanning process is not clear. At first, the percentages quickly reach 50, and then a long process of scanning sectors of the disk begins, without any calculation of the end time of the operation.
-
Scan sessions. There is no way to save a disk scan session. You will always have to start the scanning process over again.
-
Duplicate results. The program will often show duplicate results, with the second copy not working.
-
The software is not able to name the files found by deep scanning. All files found by the signature will be named with a consecutive number only.
-
Monitoring disk connections. The program doesn't show the new mounted devices in the system. You have to update the disk list manually.
-
File formats. The 1000 supported file signatures metric is nothing more than a marketing ploy. In practice, the program often struggles to find even common file formats.
-
If there is no preview, you have to restore it. If the program cannot show a preview of the file, it prompts you to try to open it on your system. To restore a file you have to buy the program.
-
Sort results. No ability to sort results in the table of hits.
-
Auto resume scan. If a bad disk is disconnected then reconnected, the program can't automatically resume scanning.
-
Restoring file systems. Often the program can not restore the original disk structure with the names of folders and files that were there before data loss. The site also claims support for file systems that are not supported by its scanners - APFS, HFS, EXT.
-
Damaged data filtering. The program cannot show damaged data in any way.

Data Recovery with Wondershare Recoverit for Windows
Tested on: Windows 11 (version 21H2)
For a company that offers such a broad range of products, how well does Wondershare Recoverit compare to competitive data recovery products when put through rigorous testing? Let’s take a look.
How We Test
We take a methodical approach to data recovery. This standardized process produces fact-based results that we can use to make an objective observation of the software. Our testing procedure includes the following stages:
# | Step | Description |
---|---|---|
1 | Installation | We take a look at the duration and difficulty of each applications installation process from the perspective of an end user. |
2 | Source selection | Next, we review how easy it is to select the drive you want to scan. For our tests, we use virtual hard drives containing a diverse range of file types. |
3 | Scanning process | If a data recovery application supports multiple scan types, we perform all that are available to determine the effectiveness of each. |
4 | Managing found data | We look at how easy the tool makes it to explore and filter the data that was discovered. |
5 | Recovery and post-processing | Following the completion of recovery, we review the recovered data and see how much is still intact and usable. |
Now that you’re aware of how we review each tool, let’s take a look at the typical recovery process of Wondershare Recoverit.
Step 1
Installation
Overall, the installation process is very simply. Once you download the installer from the Wondershare site, it only takes a few clicks to get the application installed.
The installer is 1.2 MB. Once installed, the application takes up a whopping 401 MB of space on your drive. The install time is quite slow because it needs to download additional files over the internet. This is important to note, as it means you're unable to install the application offline.
Once opened following installation, you're taken directly to the source selection screen.
Step 2
Source selection
The source selection screen will display a list of the partitions on your drives (both internal and external). Under Quick Access, you have the option of scanning particular areas for lost files, including the Recycle Bin, Desktop, or a folder of your choice.
It appears that there's no option to scan an entire drive with all of its partitions, unlike other tools which offer this option. In Wondershare Recoverit, only the partitions themselves can be scanned for data.
Selecting one of the partitions will immediately begin the scanning process.
Step 3
Scanning process
In the bottom left, while the scan is running, you'll see an indication of how far in the scan is by percentage. It will also tell you how many sectors have been scanned and how many there are left.
You have the option to pause the scan at any point, as well as stop it. While the scan is active, you can review the discovered data and preview it as it appears in the list.
Once the scan is finished, a prompt will appear advising how many files were found.
Managing found files
Firstly, you can choose how you want to display search results: by file location or by file type. Furthermore, you can search for specific files using the search bar at the top right. Results can be filtered by file type, date modified, file size, or whether or not the file was deleted.
The available view modes include List View, Detail View, and Icon view. Double-clicking a file will open a preview. Inside the preview screen, you can go to the next photo without closing it, which is useful for photo recovery.
Unfortunately, the results of your scan are not saved. Therefore, leaving the results screen means you will need to scan the drive again if needed. There is also no recovery chance prediction, so you have no idea what files have the best chance of recovery.
Recovery and post-processing
Recovering your files is very straightforward. After you choose an output location and confirm recovery, Wondershare Recoverit takes care of the rest.
When finished, you'll be met with a small message that advises how many files were recovered and the number of files that couldn't be recovered.

Karma
12 rating criteria
Right off the bat, Wondershare Recoverit scored above average for Karma rating. It receives regular updates and it has been around long enough to be considered a trustworthy program. Wondershare also offers excellent support across multiple channels, including phone, email, and live chat. Unfortunately, there is no changelog available, which is surprising considering the regularly scheduled updates it receives.

Wondershare Recoverit scores above average again in terms of bang for the buck. It offers subscription and lifetime-based licenses at a reasonable price when compared to other tools. New users can trial the software by recovering up to 100 MB for free. However, in terms of how much it costs compared to its performance, it’s a little pricey.

Usability
18 rating criteria
The user interface is a strong point for Wondershare Recoverit. It’s clean, responsive, and keeps everything accessible without seeming overcrowded. Scan results can be narrowed down using a number of filters, and specific files can be found using the search function.
Unfortunately, scan results cannot be mounted as a disk, so all previewing of the files needs to be done within Recoverit prior to recovery.

Recovery performance
120 rating criteria
Wondershare Recoverit’s shortcoming is its recovery performance, which is the most important factor of all for most. It does offer multiple scan types, allowing it to utilize different methods for finding lost data. However, it performed poorly in our testing phase, as we’ll touch on next.
# | Feature | Result | Description |
---|---|---|---|
1 | Deep scan | Fine | No data found on HFS+, APFS, or EXT4 partitions. |
2 | Quick scan | Bad | Failed to find most files. |
3 | Other types of scan | Good | No scanning disk images. |
4 | Device support | Good | Good device support. |
5 | Real-life recovery challenge | Fine | Delivers average results. |
6 | Other notable recovery features | Bad | Few additional recovery features. |
Clever scan
# | Feature | Score |
---|---|---|
1 | HFS+ partitions | |
2 | APFS partitions | |
3 | FAT32 partitions | |
4 | exFAT partitions | |
5 | NTFS partitions | |
6 | EXT4 partitions |
Unable to find any files on HFS+, APFS, or EXT4 partitions. It struggles the most with FAT32 partitions, as it failed to discover a lot of data. All data that was recovered from the FAT32 partition was missing a folder structure.
Quick scan
# | Feature | Score |
---|---|---|
1 | HFS+ partitions | |
2 | APFS partitions | |
3 | FAT32 partitions | |
4 | exFAT partitions | |
5 | NTFS partitions | |
6 | EXT4 partitions |
Again, HFS+, APFS, and EXT4 partitions are not supported. The quick scan performed worse than the clever scan, with data from FAT32 and exFAT partitions either not being discovered or missing a folder structure. However, recovery was highly successful on NTFS partition as it was able to recover the majority of our files fine.

3 | Windows shadow copies scanning | |
4 | Scan for lost partitions | |
5 | Recovered files' labeling | |
6 | Partial file recovery | |
7 | Disk images: scan and recovery |
Wondershare Recoverit supports an impressive number of file signatures. But, just because it supports a lot, doesn’t mean the recovery chances are equal for each of them. Some fare better than others (as we’ll see in the real-life recovery challenge shortly).
Its ability to partially recover files based on the format is good. It does support Bitlocker drives, though it does require user interaction to unlock the volume. It also supports scanning for lost partitions, but not as a standalone scan option.

8 | Unmountable partitions |
Wondershare Recoverit offers good support for your typical storage media, such as hard drives and flash storage. It is unable to recover data from mobile devices. It’s also not advanced enough to recover data from broken RAID configurations.

Wondershare Recoverit had the hardest time recovering document formats. Microsoft’s file formats had the highest rate of success. All other file formats really struggled, with most not being supported at all. If recovering Microsoft documents, maybe Recoverit would be a good option. For any other document type, we’d pass.

If you were hoping for additional recovery features, you may be disappointed to find that Wondershare Recoverit offers little in that regard. The limited features it does include is the ability to create bootable drives, preview files during scans, and moderately fast scan speeds.

Extras
10 rating criteria
It has become common for data recovery tools to offer more than just data recovery. Additional features are often included that complement data recovery in one way or another. The only extra feature available in Wondershare Recoverit is the ability to repair corrupted videos. Even then, this feature is only available to those on the Premium license, the most expensive license available to consumers.

The lack of additional features could be attributed to the fact that Wondershare has a lot of other products under its belt. Therefore, Recoverit probably doesn’t get as much love as it could be, especially considering a large focus is put on its creative suite.
The software is easy to install and easy to use.
However, some recovered files indicated as pdf, excel, winwords, cannot be opened and some photos can be seen clearly as indicated on the folder, but when opening the file, the photo is distorted only can see partial of the photos. Some files are name incorrectly therefore you have to open nearly all files to confirm that it is the correct files as named.
Sadly, there will be files even though pull out but indicated with funny names and mostly of them cannot be opened.
Overall I am still happy because nearly 70% of the files are retrieved.
Thank you Recoverit.
What do you like best?
Absolutely nothing about this product was helpful. I was impressed with its slick ability to sell me on the product while simultaneously not actually doing anything.
What do you dislike?
The product itself. The technical support that is non-existent (waited over an hour for a support representative, which would then respond an average of every 3-5 minutes) and refusal to refund a non-functioning product (despite the fact that I am a subscribing customer to several other of their applications).
Wondershare Recoverit is a great backup and data recovery software that works on practically any device. Even if you want to restore video on your old camcorder, you can use Recoverit to do so. If you want to protect data because you work from home, or just want to know your photos and videos are safe, then you can easily try the free download to see if it’s the right software for you.
Bottom line
Wondershare Recoverit is a recovery tool that comes complete with a stunning user interface and excellent ongoing support. It has good device support and comes with a useful video repair feature. But, that’s where the benefits stop.
When we tested it using our real-life recovery challenge, it was sorely lacking in comparison to other recovery solutions on the market. It really struggled to recover the majority of file formats we used. It doesn’t come with any additional features either, so you’re basically paying for a basic recovery tool at best.
That being said, while Wondershare Recoverit isn’t a shining star amongst the rest, it’s far from the worst. Test it for yourself with the free 100 MB quota, but don’t go in with glowing expectations.
